2006 - 2009 ATHENA 3 - Advanced Thematic Network of Women’s Studies in Europe

ATHENA 3, Advanced Thematic Network of Women’s Studies in Europe
brought together 80 institutes in the interdisciplinary field of women’s and gender studies. Their aim was to unite scholars, teachers, and stakeholders from civil society and public institutions in the field of gender and diversity.

ATHENA3 was coordinated by Utrecht University (the Netherlands) and was the continuation of activities and results of two three-year cycles of ATHENA (1998-2001) and ATHENA 2 (2003-2006) and those undertaken during the dissemination year (2002-2003). The major achievement of these activities has been the development of the European dimension and institutionalization of the novel academic field of women’s studies. European women’s studies were developing progressively through all the phases of the program, which initiated and mapped the European network of experts, teachers, and institutions. The network jointly developed modules, teaching materials and programs, conducted extensive research, and published reports about didactic and educational aspects of this interdisciplinary field.

Women’s Studies Centre had participated in ATHENA activities since its very beginning that is from 1998. In the three-years cycle of the ATHENA 3 Prof. Elæbieta H. Oleksy was a coordinator of the working group 1D “Visual Culture.” The aim of this working group was to investigate the implications of research in the field of emancipatory theory and practice in the study of visual culture.
